It is about 60 km from Huesca and about 45 km from Barbastro, but the mountain roads mean the journey takes a while.

From

Distance

Approx. time

Route

Huesca

60 km

1 h 15 min

A-1232 + HU-V-9101

Barbastro

45 km

1 h

A-1232 + HU-V-9101

Alquézar

38 km

50 min

Por Adahuesca o Bierge

Zaragoza

140 km

2 h

A-23 + A-1232

The final stretch of the journey to Rodellar from Bierge is along a narrow, winding road of around 15 km. In summer, traffic can be heavy. It is advisable to arrive before 9.00 am or after 5.00 pm. There is a car park on the outskirts of the village.

The Mascún Gorge: a must-see

The Mascún Gorge is the star attraction of Rodellar. Considered one of the most impressive gorges on the Iberian Peninsula, it features vertical cliffs reaching heights of up to 400 metres, caves, natural stone arches and pools of crystal-clear water. You don’t need to be a climber or a canyoneer to enjoy it.

There is a hiking trail that allows you to explore the interior of the canyon without any specialist equipment. The most popular route starts at the bottom of the ravine, just outside the village, and takes you several kilometres along the rock faces, wading across the river at certain points.

What you’ll see at Mascún

El Tozal de Mallos: rock formations that rise from the bottom of the canyon like natural towers.

La Fuente de la Tamara: a spring gushing from the very rock face of the canyon.

Natural arches: limestone vaults formed by river erosion over millions of years.

Pools and backwaters: clean, cool water even in the height of August, perfect for cooling off.

Colonies of griffon vultures: can be seen almost with complete certainty flying over the walls of the canyon.

Climbing in Rodellar: a world-class destination

Rodellar, along with Siurana and certain areas of the Pyrenees, is one of Europe’s leading sport climbing destinations. Its high, compact limestone walls are home to hundreds of bolted routes, with a concentration of high-difficulty routes that attracts climbers from all over the world.

The peak season runs from February to June and from September to November. Summers in sunny areas can be very hot, although north-facing areas remain cool even in August.

Sector

Guidance

Level

Features

El Soplete

North

7a – 9a

The most famous. You can find out more at guara.org.

Canyoning in the Rodellar area

In addition to the Mascún, the area around Rodellar is home to several canyons of varying difficulty levels. Some are suitable for families with children, whilst others require experience and specialist equipment.

Upper Mascún Gorge: the upper section of the gorge, featuring abseiling and pools. Booking with a local company guarantees safety and knowledge of the terrain.

Hiking: routes from Rodellar

Rodellar is also an excellent starting point for hiking trails that require no specialist equipment. The paths allow you to explore the bottom of the canyon, the higher viewpoints and the abandoned villages in the surrounding area.

Mascún Valley Trail: easy to moderate, 4–6 km round trip, 2–3 hours. Most of the establishments are run by locals or by people who moved here decades ago, drawn by the climbing.

Hostels and climbers’ lodges: the most common choice for those travelling alone or in sports groups. An international atmosphere, information on the climbing areas, and the chance to organise group outings.

Country cottages: limited availability, but options do exist. It is advisable to book well in advance during the peak climbing season (May and October).

Camping: There are designated camping areas around the village. Please check the current regulations before camping outside the designated areas, as you are within the nature reserve.

The choice of places to eat in the village is very limited. There are one or two bars offering a set lunch menu during the season. If you’re looking for more options, Bierge (15 km away) and Barbastro (45 km away) have restaurants with a wider variety of dishes.

Frequently asked questions about Rodellar

Can you visit the Mascún Gorge without any canyoneering experience?

Yes. The hiking route along the Mascún valley floor is accessible to anyone in reasonably good physical shape. You’ll need to walk over rocks and wade across the river at several points, so make sure you wear suitable footwear that can get wet. For the technical descent involving abseiling, you do need to go with a guided tour.

Is Rodellar suitable for families with children?

With some caveats. The hiking route along the bottom of the canyon is suitable for children aged 8–10 and over who are in good physical condition. Climbing and technical canyoning are not suitable for young children. For families with children under the age of 8, Bierge and La Peonera are better options in the area.

When is the best time to visit Rodellar?

For climbing: spring (March–June) and autumn (September–November). For hiking and canyoning: April to October. In August, the bottom of the canyon can get very busy. Winters are cold, but on sunny days it is possible to climb on the south-facing sections.

Is there parking in Rodellar?

There is a car park on the outskirts of the village. During the high season, it fills up early in the morning. We recommend arriving before 9.00 am or using the alternative car parks along the access road and walking the last few kilometres.

Is a guide required for the Mascún Gorge?

For the hiking route along the bottom of the canyon, no. For the technical descent involving abseiling and specialist equipment, it is compulsory to go with an accredited guiding company. Never go technical canyoning without a guide if you lack experience and your own certified equipment.

What level of climbing experience is required to climb in Rodellar?

Rodellar is known for its high-difficulty routes (7c and above), but there are crags with routes ranging from 5c to 6a for intermediate climbers. If you’re a beginner, it’s best to book a day with a guide or join a beginner’s course at the most accessible crags.

Some villages captivate visitors with their history.
