1 – The route begins at Tejería, in the municipality of Aguas. In this place we will find a parking area. At the back of the house our path starts, descend a little to cross a small ravine.
2 – At this point we will cross a path, turn right entering it and gently ascend to the hermitage of the Virgen de la Fabana.
3 – We will continue the march along the same path, but we have to be attentive to a new crossing. When we reach the bifurcation of two ravines, we will go to the left and we will progress through the interior of one of them.
4 – After the gorges of the Fabana, we will ignore the paths that leave our left to go up to the Llanos de los Hongos. Here we will turn to the right. If you arrive with forces you can choose to climb straight to the top.
5 – You can also ascend by turning a little more to the right to ascend the Llanos de los Hongos and then turn left to reach the ridge, then to the summit of Tozal de Guara (a little longer, but less hard).
6 – At the time of descent, we will return a few meters where we have come until we find a quarry on the left. We will enter it and descend sliding on the stones until we can.
7 – The quarry becomes a path and goes down deep into the Abadejo ravine. We just have to keep going down and suddenly the path that we have climbed and near the Hermitage of the Virgen de la Fabana will appear.
8 – Now we just have to be attentive and turn right at the junction that we will find and we will have reached the hermitage. From here to the Tejería we will retrace our steps.
History and culture
We are facing one of the most emblematic excursions of Guara, the highest point of the Sierra with 2077 meters of altitude. It is the most coveted climb by hikers or mountaineers. Do not be fooled by its altitude, there are three thousand in the Pyrenees easier and less demanding. There are climatic aspects to consider as the northern storms, which can play a trick on us, not seeing them coming and the thick fog. The route is ideal to do it all year round, in winter we must take into account the hours of light and in summer the high temperatures, lack of water and the sun, it is worth getting up early in both cases. As cultural inducements mention “La Tejería” and the Romanesque hermitage, in ruins, of La Virgen de la Fabana from the 12th century. In the environmental aspect it is necessary to mention the great diversity of vegetation and fauna. Among trees and large bushes, we will find yews, box trees, pines, holly trees and holm oaks among many. As in the whole mountain range, in the upper part, the nun’s pillow or pillow will be present. Aromatic plants such as savory, thyme and rosemary will impregnate us with their aromas during the ascent. In the ravines of La Fabana and El Abadejo, we can see the rare and colorful bear’s ear (Ramonda myconi), a vestige of the tertiary, and the king’s crown (saxífraga longifolia), a plant that only blooms once in its life and then go dead. Wild boar and roe deer coexist with small mammals, while from the air, they are observed by hungry raptors
Legend
The Mountain range of Guara agglutinates to other smaller mountain ranges, like those of Gratal, Gabardiella, Sevil, Balces or Asba; This is the legend of how the Sierra de Guara was formed. Gratal and Gabardiella were two young mountains that were born together and over the years fell in love. Gabardon, father of Gabardiella, did not see with good eyes that relationship and asked for help to his friend the giant Guara. This one night, while the lovers were sleeping, he took out his enormous club and gave such a blow to the earth that it caused a great cut, where he made the Flumen river flow and flow, thus leaving the two lovers separated for life. Gratal full of anger, pounced on the giant killing him. Today the silhouette of the giant Guara lying on the ground, can be seen from the road from Huesca to Barbastro, that if with a little imagination.
