The Sierra de Guara’s vast landscape is home to scenes of unique beauty, abandoned villages accessible only on foot, and small rural hamlets where life seems to stand still and everything moves at a different pace.
Today we’re heading to another of the charming spots in the Sierra de Guara that you simply mustn’t miss on your next visit to this lovely region.
Nocito and its surroundings, one of the most authentic spots in Guara
Nocito, situated on the northern slope of the Sierra de Guara, is a small village in the valley comprising two hamlets: San Juan, with three houses and the 18th-century parish church of San Juan; and, across a medieval bridge over the Guatizalema river, the hamlet of San Pedro, or Santa Marina, with a chapel dedicated to this saint, built in the traditional local style on top of Romanesque ruins.
A truly captivating spot from which to admire the Tozal de Guara, and also a perfect destination for birdwatchers. On the outskirts of Nocito lies the Sanctuary of San Úrbez, where his remains are preserved and where he spent the last 40 years of his life. The historic trail, a former pilgrimage route, will this year become a 126 km tourist route crossing the province from north to south, linking the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park with the Sierra y los Cañones de Guara Natural Park. Traditionally, on the last Sunday in June, a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of San Úrbez is held.
The Vadiello reservoir and its spectacular scenery
This area of exceptional beauty is home to such peaceful spots as the chapels of San Cosme and San Julián.
If you don’t suffer from vertigo, you can climb up to the Mallos de Ligüerre, or reach the foot of the rock formation known as the Huevo de San Cosme.
Without a doubt, Vadiello Reservoir and its surroundings are full of charming spots that are well worth a visit.
Rodellar and the gorge of Mascún
You may well have heard of the “Guara dolphin”, as this rock formation in the Mascún Ravine—which resembles a dolphin—is commonly known.
To reach this spot in the Sierra de Guara, we set off from Rodellar, a small village that is very popular with sport climbing enthusiasts from all over the world.
The entire Rodellar valley is home to places of unique beauty for lovers of nature tourism and active tourism, such as: the abandoned village of Otín, the Pedruel Bridge or the Losa Mora Dolmen.
The Sierra de Guara, a photographer’s paradise
