Schematic Rock Art

Schematic rock art spans the period from the Neolithic to the Metal Age and was created by peoples who were already practising agriculture and livestock farming.
In hard-to-reach rock shelters, they continued to paint highly simplified human and animal figures, symbols, geometric shapes, patches, lines… until they arrived at mere schematisations of reality. This simplification and abstraction represented an aesthetic evolution from the naturalistic paintings of the Post-Palaeolithic period.
Interpreting their meaning and purpose is difficult, which is why some authors attribute to them a strong symbolic significance of a religious and ritual nature.
The schematic style is the most common in the Vero River Cultural Park and is found in the rock shelters at Mallata, Barfaluy, Gallinero, Regacens, Lecina Superior, etc.
