With Christmas just around the corner, we’re all incredibly busy putting the finishing touches to preparations for those days when the villages of the Sierra de Guara are the setting for long-awaited family reunions.
And although times change, Christmas remains the quintessential time for family fun, and in every home certain rituals or traditions surrounding it are still observed.
La tronca, a tradition that lives on
In many villages in Aragon, many children are already feeding “la tronca” because on Christmas Eve she will hand out sweets and presents to all the children who gather around her to sing Christmas carols whilst tapping her with a stick.
The flavours of Christmas in the Sierra de Guara
Using the delicious almonds from our fields, we make artisan nougat, which will be enjoyed after meals during the festive season, along with dried apricots, plums, raisins and some liqueur, such as those produced in Colungo or sweet wine.
The oil from the Sierra de Guara brings out the flavour of dishes such as cardo with cod and roast lamb, accompanied by fine wines from the Somontano Designation of Origin. We are sure that these dishes will be a staple on the tables of those of you spending Christmas in the Sierra de Guara.
Plans for enjoying Christmas with the family
But as it won’t all be about eating, here are a few ideas for things to do with the family this Christmas in the Sierra de Guara:
- Visit La Casa de los Títeres in Abizanda; at this time of year, it’s always a delight to spend some time at the house-museum. You can also check the programme at: https://www.lacasadelostiteres.com/
- Visit one of the nativity scenes along the Aragon Nativity Scene Route, such as those in Monzón, Barbastro or Torreciudad.
- Spend a morning at Zagalandia in Barbastro, the leisure fair for children aged 18 months to 16 years, which takes place from 26 to 29 December.
- Ice skating on the ice rinks set up in towns such as Huesca, Barbastro and other smaller towns like Aínsa.
- Visit one of the cheese shops in the Sierra de Guara, Cheeses from Radiquero in Adahuesca or, Villa Villera in Sieso from Huesca.
- Plan a trip to go Nordic walking in the Sierra de Guara. Remember to pack a fleece and a windbreaker, and don’t let the cold be an excuse.

- Book one of the workshops or guided tours to the most iconic sites of the rock art in the Río Vero Cultural Park, organised by the Colungo Rock Art Interpretation Centre.
