Activities to enjoy as a family in the Sierra de Guara
The Sierra y los Cañones de Guara Natural Park offers a wide range of family adventure activities, with something for all tastes and all ages.

Fun, learning and experiences for all ages
Interpretation centres and museum spaces
The interpretation centres in the Sierra de Guara are places where visitors a9> through a range of various activities we will learn about aspects of life in the region and I am thinking, among other things, of the Centre for Rock Art Centre in Colungo, for example, although there is more. The spectacular thing is that wherever we go we will find activities for everyone in the public. In the following paragraphs, I’ll outline a few must-sees, though you might want to take a look at the various visitor centres and museums.
Sports activities and interaction with animals
For sports enthusiasts, having a great time is a breeze in Guara. There are via ferratas, cycling routes, canyoning for all levels, easy hikes and horse riding; there are even options for animal lovers, such as El Ventorrillo Riding Centre or Granja Aventura in Barbastro.
Aragón Planetarium: an adventure amongst the stars
If you’re planning to spend a few days in the Sierra de Guara and the surrounding area, it’s well worth popping over to Huesca to visit the Aragon Planetarium. It features a dome 10 metres in diameter, a 4D simulator and an observatory with three telescopes.
The Aragón Planetarium is a place to enjoy, and everyone around here knows it for its family-friendly activities, although it is also a place of work where experts, professionals and astronomy enthusiasts come together. There are activities specifically for children, who will be amazed the moment they walk in at the sight of a huge globe.
You can round off your visit with a trip to the Mathematics Museum, a place where the whole family can enjoy a different way of looking at maths, through games, activities and lots of fun.
La Casa de los Títeres de Abizanda
We’re off to another area bordering the Sierra y los Cañones de Guara Natural Park. We’re going to visit the Casa de los Títeres in Abizanda. It’s another must-see if you’re travelling with children. Even before you arrive, the most striking feature is the 11th-century defensive tower that makes Abizanda so distinctive. The Puppet House is a magical place created by one of the oldest and best-known puppet companies in the world: the Titiriteros de Binéfar decided to set up in Abizanda to have a place from which to create and perform their shows, but also to welcome other artists from all corners of the globe.
The tour begins with a visit to the museum, where you’ll find puppets from all over the world, each one unique and some of them very old. After the museum visit, we’ll head straight to the theatre performance. The plays are usually staged in a small but very pretty theatre with very comfortable seats. Weather permitting, we can enjoy the performance in the threshing floor, outdoors. After the performance, definitely out in the open-air courtyard, it’s time to enjoy the masks, the big-headed figures, games and even a puppet show. The puppeteers stay around to explain, if asked, all sorts of things about puppets and their magical craft.
Discover rock art as a family
Colungo is famous not only for its liqueurs and ravines, but also for its Rock Art Centre. In Guara, alongside a wealth of sporting opportunities, a wide range of activities and stunning natural surroundings, we have the prehistoric remains along the River Vero, consisting mainly of cave paintings, which have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Rupertre Art Centre in Colungo invites you to embark on a fascinating journey through human history here, in the area around the River Vero, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Thanks to the various interpretative resources, we can discover the creative genius of humankind, their beliefs and ways of life over the course of 22,000 years. The centre also serves as the starting point for guided tours of the rock-shelter sites. The programme at the Colungo Rock Art Centre is complemented by a range of hands-on workshops (hunting, fire-making, painting, etc.). It’s brilliant. You can take part in a prehistoric technology workshop, as there are sessions on prehistoric archery, flint preparation and carving, and you can even witness a prehistoric ritual. There are also guided tours to explore the rock art found in the Sierra de Guara. A fantastic experience!
Adventure and nature for the whole family
So far, all the activities suggested have been fairly low-key. It’s time for a bit of exercise, so that the children feel like getting back into the very healthy habit of taking a nap – or at least sleeping through the night. You’re in a family-friendly area, so there’s a wide range of activities for everyone.
In the Sierra de Guara, you can enjoy everything from an easy section of one of the best-known gorges to via ferratas. Here you can also enjoy cycling routes for the whole family, all kinds of excursions along our trails and even horse riding. It is very, very important that if you are travelling with children, you exercise extreme caution when choosing the via ferratas, the gorges you will be descending and the trails you will be walking.
As always, we recommend making use of the excellent qualified guides available in the area. That way, you can enjoy a via ferrata suited to the whole group’s ability, descend a section of a gorge where everyone has a great time, or go on an excursion that leaves everyone happy. Avoiding problems is a sure-fire way to ensure a happy outing. Especially when you’re out and about with children.

Discovering wine culture with children
First things first: no, we don’t give wine to children. But travelling with them won’t stop you from getting to know Somontano wine up close. There are wineries that have organised tours for the whole family. And although, as I’ve said, the children won’t be drinking wine, they will learn how it’s made and the history behind this important product.
