A small part of the Sierra de Guara lies within an area designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, namely, the Sobrarbe-Pyrenees Geopark, a land whose lush, mountain-filled landscape accompanies visitors throughout their journey.
Thanks to this proximity and the existing roads, it’s easy to take a day trip by car from the heart of the Sierra de Guara to visit some of the key sites that will help you understand why Sobrarbe is of such geological importance.
A drive from the Sierra de Guara to the Sobrarbe-Pyrenees Geopark
We invite you to take the A-2205 regional road, which winds its way into the Sobrarbe region, passing through small, peaceful villages such as Arcusa, where you’ll be surprised to find a small boutique hotel with a restaurant – the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle for a few days.
Continuing along the road, another must-see stop is Guaso, from where you can see how the geological substrate shapes the Sobrarbe region; the best spot for this panoramic view is the Tozal de Guaso viewpoint, situated next to the church’s esconjuradero. From there, we can see the Cotiella Massif, Monte Perdido or, closer to us, the Peña Montañesa.
Back to the car to continue on our way until we reach the N-260 national road and head towards Boltaña, from the castle in this town, you can see Pico Santa Marina, with a striking structure that bears witness to the role of compressive forces in the formation of the Pyrenees.
We’ll take the same road back towards Aínsa, another of the villages in our province, alongside Alquézar and Roda de Isábena, which has been recognised as the most beautiful village in Spain. And after a must-see stop at the visitor centre located right inside the castle, we have two options for the return journey: go back via Guaso, or take the A-138 towards Barbastro, from which we can turn off after Ligüerre de Cinca towards Olsón.
Travelling with children in Sobrarbe
However, if you are travelling with children, we recommend continuing along the road to Barbastro and stopping off at Abizanda, taking a stroll through the little village, climbing up to the watchtower and visiting The Puppet House. There are also two places to eat there, in case it’s nearly dinner time, or if you simply fancy a bite to eat before setting off again.
