Castillo de los Santos

This short and pleasant walk offers spectacular scenery and the chance to discover the charm of the landscapes, wildlife and flora of the Sierra de Sevil.

This route begins in the car park of the Mesón de Sevíl mountain refuge and runs almost entirely on level ground until it reaches the Barranco de los Santos ravine, where it descends to the scree slope near the castle ruins. Once there, you cross the scree slope to reach the castle from the left-hand side.

Just before reaching the ruins of the keep, there is a simple 2-metre-wide stone path fitted with a rope serving as a handrail to make it easier to cross. The path continues to wind its way upwards until it reaches the top of the rocky outcrop where the Castle of Los Santos once stood.

All that remains of the religious-military complex of Castillo de los Santos are the ruins of the tower and part of the church’s foundations. Dating from the 11th century, the tower is older than the church itself. The tower served as a watchtower built following the capture of Alquézar, from which the route from this village to Boltaña was monitored.

The views from the castle, perched on a limestone outcrop, are breathtaking, as they take in almost the entire Hoya de Huesca region and a large part of the Pyrenees mountain range.
