Lathe for oil for Buera

For centuries, olive cultivation for oil production has been the cornerstone of the local economy in many villages nestled at the foot of the Sierra de Guara.

To discover the rich culture of olive oil, we recommend visiting the old olive press, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, located in the village of Buera.

The careful restoration of all its components, accompanied by explanatory panels, provides an insight into the unique characteristics of a crop that defines the character of the Somontano region.
Exhibition:
A large room houses all the equipment used in the past to extract the oil: the millstone, the old lever press, and the hydraulic press that replaced it in the early 20th century. All of these, once restored, can be seen in operation.

It is also a journey through the olive groves of Somontano, discovering their biological diversity: more than 20 varieties, some of which are native to the region and even unique to certain villages.

The exhibition space is complemented by an engaging and informative audiovisual presentation and a number of display panels that invite visitors to discover the many traditions, rituals and beliefs associated with the olive tree, which are still very much alive in the Somontano region today.
