Salto de Roldán

The Salto de Roldán consists of two enormous conglomerate rock formations, Peña San Miguel (1,126 m) to the west and Peña Amán (1,121 m) to the east, between which the River Flumen flows through a narrow gorge known as the Palomeras. These cliffs are home to a large colony of griffon vultures, choughs and other rock-dwelling birds. From their summit one can see a spectacular panorama which extends on clear days to the Moncayo and other mountain ranges of the Iberian Mountain Range.

From the access road to the village of Santa Eulalia de la Peña, a narrow, tarmac-surfaced forest track runs for about 2 km, ending at the Salto de Roldán car park, where this route begins.

The path leaves the car park and heads towards the base of the Peña San Miguel rock face, climbing up the slope until it reaches the steepest section, where iron pegs arranged like a ladder provide access to the top of the rock.

Once at the summit, you can see the remains of a defensive tower (Sen Castle), a cistern and the 12th-century chapel of San Miguel, and take in the beautiful view of the river as it winds its way from the limestone cliffs of Cienfuens until it disappears into the Hoya de Huesca.

The return journey follows the same route.
